چکیده

Combining logics has become a rapidly expanding enterprise that is inspired mainly by concerns about modu larity and the wish to join together tailored made logical tools into more powerful but still manageable ones A natural question is whether it o ers anything new over and above existing standard languages By analysing a number of applications where combined logics arise we argue that combined logics are a potentially valuable tool in applied logic and that endorsements of standard languages often miss the point Using the history of quanti ed modal logic as our main example we also show that the use of combined structures and logics is a recurring theme in the analysis of existing logical systems AMS Subject Classi cation A B CR Subject Classi cation F F I

A Fibred Tableau Calculus for BDI Logics

In [12,16] we showed how to combine propositional BDI logics using Gabbay’s fibring methodology. In this paper we extend the above mentioned works by providing a tableau-based decision procedure for the combined/fibred logics. To achieve this end we first outline with an example two types of tableau systems, (graph & path), and discuss why both are inadequate in the case of fibring. Having done...

How Not to Combine Modal Logics

This paper describes a failed attempt to decompose the fusion of two non-normal modal logics as a composition of iterated nonnormal modalisations. That strategy had already succeeded in the transfer of soundness, completeness and decidability for normal modal logics, but we show here why it fails for the transference of some of these properties in the fusion non-normal modal logics. The possibi...

Best of Both Worlds; Comment on “(Re) Making the Procrustean Bed? Standardization and Customization as Competing Logics in Healthcare”

This article builds on Mannion and Exworthy’s account of the tensions between standardization and customization within health services to explore why these tensions exist. It highlights the limitations of explanations which root them in an expression of managerialism versus professionalism and suggests that each logic is embedded in a set of ontological, epistemological and moral commitments wh...

AGM Meets Abstract Argumentation: Expansion and Revision for Dung Frameworks

In this paper we combine two of the most important areas of knowledge representation, namely belief revision and (abstract) argumentation. More precisely, we show how AGM-style expansion and revision operators can be defined for Dung’s abstract argumentation frameworks (AFs). Our approach is based on a reformulation of the original AGM postulates for revision in terms of monotonic consequence r...
